Eurovision 2022 - Greece - May 8th 2025

Hi hi hi ! In today's edition of Eurovision Histories,  we aren't going back that far at all , just 3 years in the past where the world was supporting Ukraine in their fight against Russia, oil prices caused chaos and 27 year old me was moving and was finally working in an industry she loves ( I'm still in my job today in fact)

The 66th Eurovision Song Contest took place in Turin, Italy. The semi finals took place on the 10th and 12th of May with grand final held on May 14th. 40 countries took part this year with Russia's expulsion from the EBU. Greece competed in the 1st semi final on May 10th and qualified for the final.

Here's the facts first before we go deeper into the song and performance. Here's a link too for the semi final performance if you've forgotten the song or haven't seen this one.

Song : Die Together
Artist: Amanda Tenfjord
Place in Semi 1 : 3rd 🥉( Qualified to Final)
Points : 211
Place in Final : 8th
Points : 215

Greece went for an internal selection for their entry this year, shortlisting 4 artists for Eurovision, before annocing Amanda's participation on December 15th 2021. The song was revealed along with the music video on March 10th 2022.

Greece performed 15th during the semi final, between the songs between Iceland and Norway. The performance of the song was Amanda alone on stage, dressed in a long white gown with bare feet, sat on a chair. There were also many other empty chairs scattered all over the stage. She stands up on the 2nd verse and then heads to the front of the stage. There's a blue theme with lighting and an led with a couple on the right of the stage. Simple but beautifully fitting.

The song itself is a sad affair, about two people in what could be deemed in a dying relationship. They want to end their life so they can 'die together', thus being together forever. It's pretty bleak to say the least. The bridge into the final chorus is probably the 1st part with a slightly quieter part before the crescendo into the final chorus and then an abrupt end, which also compliments the lyrics well.

Greece's entry was very popular with the juries in both the semi and the final as opposed to the televote. They placed 1st with the juries in their semi with 151 points. Gaining 4 sets of jury 12's and 8th with the public with 60 points, getting 1 set of 12 points from Norway (Amandais half Norwegian) . They gave their jury and televoting 12's both to Albania in the semi final. In the final, they placed 6th with the juries, gaining 158 points and 12th with the public with 57 points, getting them their 2nd consecutive top 10 finish. Their 12 from the jury in the final went to Azerbaijan and the 12 from the public went to Spain. They got 6 sets of 12 from the juries in the final and 1 set of 12 from the public that came from Albania.

3 words then to sum this one up would be haunting, sad and simple. But simple in this case works well as it fits beautifully with the haunting vibe of this song. I didn't connect with this song for a while but now it's a frequent listen !!

Until the next time, remember history is important especially if it's Eurovision History !!!
